Downtown Student of the Month - Holly West!

IMG_3292
Even though that first class I practically melted, it turns out that regular classes are even hotter. But it didn't matter though, I was already hooked! I liked that I could concentrate through the heat to find a posture. I loved the challenge. I also loved that the Hot Room is a judgement free zone so I am my only competition. The staff are very knowledgeable, too. I've had several different teachers in the past month--each have a different style and emphasize different points so I learn something new each class that allows me go deeper into a stretch or hold a posture longer. I am much more toned. I trained for a half marathon for 12 weeks earlier this year but I actually saw more results from completing the 30-day challenge at the Hot Room! Hydrate! Even on days you don't go to class. Be patient with yourself and breathe to ease into those tough postures. Camel is the most fun for me! Half moon is my second favorite because I've experienced the most improvement here. My first couple weeks of classes, I hated that posture, but now I look forward to the backbend and really challenge myself to see my reflection in the window--I'm almost there!

Uptown Student of the Month - Aaron Bell!

2015-11-16 13.13.03-1

I remember my first class like it was yesterday, it was on a Saturday and the place was packed.  I came in to class without water and fresh off two cups of coffee; I was completely caught off guard.   I have never experienced the range of emotions like I did during that 90 minute class; I was hot, sweaty, dizzy, nauseous, mad, confused, and ready to be done.  After class I thought, "never again", however I wasn't going to give in that easy.

I returned to THR  the very next day because I was determined to make it through the entire class without hitting the floor in total exhaustion.  The class was just as hard, however I was better prepared mentally.  I made it through and was hooked.

Health benefits for me have been as much mental as they have been physical.  Physically, my back pain, balance, flexibility, strength and energy level have all improved tremendously.  Mentally,  my practice has taught me how to "be comfortable in uncomfortable situations.”  Gaining this skill and applying it in real life has helped me through numerous situations both in my profession and personal life.

My advice to new students is to really listen.  This will help maintain your focus and composure during class, thus leading to a more productive and enjoyable practice.

My favorite posture is standing head to knee because it’s fun, rewards patiences, and feels great!

August Student of the Month - Tammy Heitz!

2015-08-12 11.05.22
"My first class felt like the longest 90 minutes of my life, although I was amazed when I was able to get into some postures that I had never been able to before." What made you come back? "A sincere hope that the instructors were telling the truth about the second class being better than the first, coupled with a strong desire to get into shape. Since the second class was much better, I stuck with it and now can't imagine it not being a part of my life. When I first started my practice I was overweight and out of shape, but have since returned to the size I was in my early twenties and am in the best shape of my life. In addition, I am a much more patient person these days. Advice to new students: "Come to class as often as you can during your first month and be patient with yourself. Acclimating to this yoga can take awhile, but it is so worth it. Give it a chance and it really can change your life."

June Students of the Month - Marti and Eric Olson!

Marti Eric Olson
Meet Marti and Eric, our June Students of the Month! They have been married for almost 39 years and we love that they have recently started their yoga practice together! "The first class was very hard. I was very hot and it was a challenge to do most of the yoga. My girls had encouraged me to try it and so I felt I needed to try. We did not know exactly what to expect and were completely new to yoga, but everyone has made us feel very welcome from the very first class. It was challenging but well worth the experience. I'm seeing toning in some areas which I definitely need and I have more endurance doing yard work. I have lost weight, gained endurance, and feel better after taking the classes. Hydrate starting the day before. Your progress is your own. There are all different levels in the class and you don't feel intimidated. Don't moan. The instructors are very encouraging and give lots of pointers. At the end of class they aren’t saying have a nice day, it is Namaste. It is certainly worth trying, it seems to be a very total workout without pounding your joints. Don't be afraid to try it and keep going."
